Mrs Mary Sergides
Name: Mary Sergides
Position in the Governing Body: Vice-chair, safeguarding and finance committee
Why did you decide to become a Governor at Vicar’s Green Primary School?
I decided to become a Governor because I believe that the skills, knowledge, experiences that I have acquired, whilst working for over 40 years in education in various schools can be applied and imparted to support the school.
As a retired Headteacher of Vicars Green Primary School, an ‘outstanding’ school, I feel equipped to be of service. I hold very fond memories of the school and a strong sense of loyalty and wish therefore to contribute again towards the school’s continued success
Becoming a Governor will give me the opportunity to keep up to date with current educational trends, processes and procedures.
I fully understand and appreciate the challenges that schools face and the constraints put upon them. As a Governor, I believe, together with my fellow colleagues that I can help resolve issues as they arise.
What do you think that Governors can bring to Vicar’s Green Primary School?
Being a Governor is a privilege and an opportunity to work with colleagues, school leaders and staff to make a difference to the life chances and outcomes of pupils.
Governors can provide a different perspective on aspects of school improvement, strategy, vision and school self-evaluation.
As ‘Critical Friends’ Governors can ask relevant questions for example on: standards of achievement, pupil progress and the quality of teaching, keeping the Leadership Team accountable. Governors are constantly setting higher expectations and seeking ways of improving teaching, learning and behaviour.
By taking an active part in the work of the school, Governors strive to create a better learning environment and bring about positive outcomes that will benefit the pupils.

Since 1972, I have held various teaching positions and leadership roles in various schools.

I was a governor of a school in Hillingdon from 1/9/17-31/8/22
As a former Head of VGPS and together with the wonderful school team, I led the school towards, two successful Ofsted Inspections 2008 “Good” 2013 “Outstanding”.
Apart from demonstrating successful leadership, I enjoyed creating a stimulating learning and teaching environment, as an outcome of having oversight of the building works. I also saw the expansion of the school from a 1 form entry to a two-form entry school.
